The first documentary reference to the village of Krems at the eastern end of the Wachau region has been dated back to 995. Just over 1000 years later the town has preserved its medieval architectural gems and backstreet arcade courtyards of the joint town of Krems-Stein.
The Danube station facilities are directly in front of the historical part of Stein. The new shipping musuem and world heritage centre were opened in June 2011 and have given Krems yet another attraction.
Krems has been awarded the title of "Città del Vino" and was the first Austrian town to join the guild of Europe's most illustrious wine producing municipalities. Krems is the home of the Grüner Veltliner wine. The WEINSTADTmuseum recounts the history of the town, of wine growing, of winemaking - and gives visitors the opportunity to sample a range of wines.
Local area
Anyone who passes the spectacular gates to the Wachau region will find, along with the offices of the cruise lines, an information point serving the region, plus a well stocked shop, a great restaurant 'wellenspiel' and an outdoor exhibition that reveals the many faces of the Wachau world heritage centre and ensures passengers have a great Danube experience in Krems. Just five minutes' walk from the Danube station is the new Krems 'Kunstmeile' art district. Some of the featured attractions of the Krems 'Kunstmeile' include the Krems Kunsthalle with all year round exhibitions of art, photography, design work and media art. The caricature museum is devoting a large proportion of its exhibition space to the works of the famous Austrian caricaturist, Manfred Deix.
