Dürnstein, the jewel of the Wachau region, is a quaint town whose ancient walls feature historical battlements and towers.
Trip destinations
Local area
The town is almost completely free of traffic. The saga of Richard Lionheart, King of England, tells of the king's imprisonment in the castle dungeon as he was found guilty of disrespect for the Austrian flag during one of the crusades. Evidence of the saga can be found throughout the town. Hotel Schloss Dürnstein was used as a location for a famous TV series 'The Danube Princess'. Those climbing up to the Kuenringerburg ruins are rewarded with a magnificent sweeping view of the area and the former Augustinian canon monastery and church are also well worth seeing. A stroll around Dürnstein reveals plenty of sights, too.
